TREATMENT EQUIPMENT
DIAGNOSIS
· Portable biocavity laser
can identify cancer in minutes
Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, USA, and the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland USA, patented a portable laser device in 1997 which can identify blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia and cancerous cells within minutes. Called a biocavity laser, the device detects changes in cell size and shape after a blood sample is inserted into the laser itself. This data can be transmitted to an ordinary personal computer or laptop. The biocavity laser is far more efficient than a Pap smear, one of the most popular cancer tests, as it can survey million of cells very quickly.
· Portable E-ray machine
is the size of a pizza box
In 1997, General Electric and EG&G, companies based in California, USA, created a portable, computerized X-ray the size of a pizza box. The US military, a founder of the project, plans to use the portable X-ray in mobile clinics. Not only will it serve remote and poorer communities but it can transmit images to hospital radiologists for specialist diagnosis.
· Laser probes that
detect 90% of pre-cancerous
A highly efficient laser probe capable of detecting stomach and intestinal cancers is set for commercialization. The optical detector is the work of a team of physicists software able to detect lung disease. Healthy lunge have a distinctive visual pattern, with branches look pruned. Computers can be programmed to recognize lung disease, and assess the severity. Additionally, the mathematical unpredictability of chaos theory is being applied to help understand what makes some people more susceptible than others.
TREATMENT
Intelligent bandages
contain antibiotic molecules
Researchers at Kyoto University in Kyoto, and the Kuraray Company in Kurushiki, Japan, are to begin testing an ‘intelligent’ bandage antibiotic molecules which are only activated wounds becomes infected. Infected wounds release oxygen, and in turn releases the antibiotic.
· Holographic medical
imaging for structural
Representation of the body or parts of the body in 3-D is close to becoming a reality. Voxel, based in Laguna Hills, California, USA, has experimented successfully with new X- ray technologies to produce holograms, has projected a hologram of a human liver. Holographic medical imaging will unable doctors to understand further the structure of tumours, and could provide medical students with invaluable experience.
· Carisolv is the instant
gel that dissolves tissue
Swedish dentists have developed Carisolv, a painless alternative to the dentist’s drill. Carisolv is a red gel which dissolves decayed tissue in less than 30 seconds, leaving the dentist to clean and fill the cavity. Although in some cases additional drilling is required, injections are not normally necessary.
